Vienna, Austria – Gluten Free Guide

Gluten Free Vienna, Austria

Vienna is considered the birthplace of classical music, is home to one of Europe’s largest Ferris wheels, and also houses some of the most stunning Baroque architecture I’ve ever seen in my life! However, Vienna is much more than these things alone, its rich history and vibrant city life will have you out exploring everyday you’re there! As someone with Celiac Disease, I stayed 4 days in Vienna, Austria and here are my Top 5+ gluten free places..

Travel Tip: glutenfrei means gluten free in German (main language spoken in Austria).

When I visited Vienna, my husband and I were living in Stuttgart, Germany at the time so we decided to travel to Vienna via Deutsche Bahn trains. Which I highly recommend since it’s affordable, better for the environment, and much more enjoyable than driving all day. However, since we did arrive by train there is no direct line from Stuttgart to Vienna, so we had to change trains in Nuremberg (gluten free guide coming soon!)

Before arriving in Vienna, I had little knowledge of the differences between German food and Austrian food. Although closely related in some respects, with both diets heavy in meat and potatoes, they should not be mistaken as the same. As with every cuisine, each is heavily influenced by its geographical region, history and cultural norms. That being said, some of the foods listed below will be similar to German and Italian food.

If you have Celiac Disease like me, you might be hesitant before trying all these places I’m about to list.. But I want to assure you I never had a reaction while eating at any of these places. So read below for the BEST gluten free places I ate at while visiting Vienna, Austria!

Travel Tip: Vienna, Austria is pronounced Wein, Österreich in German.

1. Gasthaus Zum Wohl

#1 on this list goes to Gasthaus Zum Wohl, which a rough translation from German to English would be “Inn for good health” (a rough translation, as Zum Wohl has many different translations, but it’s general meaning stays the same). This place specifically caters to the gluten free and lactose free crowd, with some vegan options as well. Now when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING at this place is Gluten Free (happy tears!).

My husband ordered the Zum Wohl Bier Vom Fass (Beer on tap) and I ordered the Zum Wohl Rhabarber Radler Bier. A Radler is typically a lemonade and beer mixed together, but the one I ordered was essentially a Rhubarb beer mix instead. Both beers were gluten free and tasted absolutely delicious! My non Celiac husband said he couldn’t even tell the beer was gluten free, IT TASTED THAT GOOD!

I convinced my husband we should have a three course meal here. So for appetizers, we had the “Bruschetta Classica” and “Bio Kürbissuppe” (pumpkin soup). Both were tasty and a good size before the main course. For the main course (pictured below), I had the “Kalbswiener – Das Klassische Wiener Schnitzel” (classic schnitzel) and my husband had “Waldpilz-Ragout” (wild mushroom beef ragout). The gluten free schnitzel was sooooo good!! Crispy and perfect! The ragout also had a nice flavor as well! They were both absolutely perfect to drink with our Gluten free beers! After we finished everything up, we shared a “Maroni-Mousse” (chestnut moose) for dessert.

Overall, this place was excellent! If you’re craving crispy schnitzel and tasty gluten free beer this is the place for you in Vienna, Austria! To see more photos of ALL the food I described, check out my instagram post about it here!

2. Mozart Café

Now when scoping out Vienna, you’ll realize there are A LOT of cafes.. But not all of them offer Gluten Free goodies. I’m sure “Cafe Central” is on your travel list, known extensively for its architecture, ambiance, and food.. But sadly I was disappointed to arrive there and realize none of the sweets were gluten free (This was Fall 2021, so hopefully things have changed). Nevertheless, I believe Mozart Cafe offers better views, amazing architecture and ambiance, and more importantly.. Gluten Free treats!

We stopped at Mozart Cafe twice while on our trip, once for breakfast and once for coffee and cake.. Although they do have a dinner menu, I can’t speak to that personally as I did not try it. Pictured below are our coffees (Schokolade Kaffee & Cappuccino) and a slice of “Kardinalschnitte,” a Viennese classic! The Kardinalschnitte is essentially a layered meringue-based dessert making it soo light and fluffy! It’s sweet, but not overly sweet and had a hint of strawberry in the middl. For more photos, check out my instagram post about it HERE.

In addition to having tasty coffee and cake, they also had a tasty breakfast. The menu is clearly marked on what is gluten free and lactose free, but when in doubt the server was very knowledgeable as well. If you’re looking for a gluten free place with a beautiful ambiance taking you back to the 1930’s next to the Vienna Opera House, this is the place!

3. Nestroy Gasthaus & Biergarten

I love a place that can hand me a gluten free menu and can immediately make recommendations on what is the safest to eat as a Celiac. Nestroy Gasthaus blew it out of the park with both its food and service!

They serve traditional Austrian food, with some updates on classics. I ordered the gluten free schnitzel with potatoes for dinner with a gluten free beer. My schnitzel came perfectly crispy and with a cute little flag on top indicating it was “gluten free.” My husband ordered the cordon bleu (also served gluten free) with a mixed salad. I have to say, it was a heavy meal, but oh soo tasty! For dessert we shared a gluten free crêpe as well! By the time we left, we were stuffed. Which was okay, given that Nestroy is a bit further out from the inner city so we enjoyed our time walking off the food on our way home.

Unfortunately we didn’t sit outside to enjoy the outdoor biergarten (I was cold), but the inside is just as cute and cozy. This place is a definite gluten free go to while in Vienna, Austria! For more photos of our meal, check out my instagram post about it here!

4. Pizzerria Scarabocchio

Now I know what you’re wondering, how did Italian food make it on the Top 5 Gluten Free food list for Vienna?? Well, because it was honestly THE BEST GLUTEN FREE PIZZA I’ve ever had in my life.. No Joke! Now I’ve been to Italy (check out my Gluten Free Italian Guides HERE), and this place honestly makes you feel like you got transported from Austria back to Italy for the night!

My husband and I ordered the Castello and Toscana Gluten Free pizza and they were absolutely tasty!! The sauce was fresh and the flavors were truly mouth watering. In addition, we ordered a side salad that featured tender eggplant and other seasonal veggies, which to my surprise came with a side of Gluten Free flatbread without even asking! Excellent service! We were both in love and stuffed, but our server insisted we tried the homemade Gluten Free Tiramisu that his mom made (or grandmother? I can’t remember I was in a food coma by then..), but it was absolutely delicious!

In addition to it tasting delicious, I should add that everything is made fresh and within eyesight. The pizza brick oven is in view of the dinning area so I felt celiac safe knowing I could watch how my meal was prepared with care. They put the gluten free pizza on a separate pan to cook in the stone oven, so as not to touch the same areas as the gluten pizzas. An important note, as I know some Celiacs are more sensitive than others.

Definitely make this gluten free place a stop while visiting Vienna, Austria! If you would like to see all the photos from our meal, check out my instagram post about it HERE.

5. Restaurant Führich

While in Vienna, we had to stop at a more traditional restaurant to get some bratwurst. Restaurant Führich serves up traditional schnitzel and bratwurst, while sharing a menu with curry and other beloved pasta dishes. The ambiance was gorgeous! Big windows that bring the outside in, and small candles at each table. We went at night, so looking at all the building lights twinkle in the distant really made me feel like I was a cozy high end spot.

My husband and I went around dinner time and were able to be seated immediately, but I will note that this place is usually busy. I decided to opt for the bratwurst dish and it did not disappoint. Paired with a Gluten Free Beer and I was in heaven! I’d happily go back to try more tasty dishes! I should also add, that every gluten free spot we went to in Vienna, Austria had a different selection of gluten free beers, so I definitely had to try them all!

6. Blueorange – Coffe and Bagel

This place is known for their Gluten Free Bagels so I had to stop in to give them a try! My husband and I both ordered gluten free bagels to pair with our coffees and Green-ginger boost Smoothie (which I highly recommend). The menu was easy to read, as they are ready for tourists with an English menu and a very knowledgeable wait staff. Our server even offered to toast our gluten free bagels in a separate toaster to avoid cross contamination. Pictured below was our tasty breakfast, which was super flavorful and felt like a home cooked meal. I would definitely go back in a heartbeat!

Honorable Mentions…

With the amount of gluten free options in Vienna, Austria, it was simply too difficult to eat at every place. However, here are a few that were recommended to me. Sadly, I can’t vouch for all of them personally but I’ve heard wonderful things about the below gluten free places…

7. Gasthaus am Predigtstuhl

To be honest, I’m really bummed that I wasn’t able to make it to this restaurant during our short stay in Vienna. The reviews are endless on how celiac safe this restaurant is and how many gluten free options they have to offer. I can not personally speak to the quality, but I’m sure the 400+ 4.4 Star Reviews aren’t lying. Their website stresses that they make everything homemade and prepare everything with the upmost care. Give it a try and let me know how it was?

8. Allerrgikercafé

A place for tasty treats with an allergen safe menu! I personally did not eat here, but viewing their menu online I was convinced that I NEEDED to stop in.. but unfortunately it didn’t fit into our tight schedule with sight seeing and listening to classical music. Allerrikercafé takes allergies seriously, which is probably why all their reviews rage on how user friendly their menu is. Allerrikercafé is free from Soy, flavor enhancers, and artificial flavors. Additionally, their menu contains all the easy graphics to know what is gluten free, lactose free, nut free, egg free… etc. I wish I would have stopped in to try a bite of their famous Torte.. Until next time!

9. Cafe Grüner Salon

A 100% Gluten Free Café in Vienna, Austria! Need I say more?? With the positive reviews and glowing recommendations, I would definitely add this spot to your list! It was on my list, but sadly I wasn’t able to visit afterall. However, be mindful of their hours. They call themselves a weekend cafe, because they are only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Don’t be like and make the mistake of showing up on a Thursday.

Travel Tip

If you’re like me, you probably research gluten free food in an area before traveling there. But, once you’re at your destination, it can be hard to remember all the places you read about. That’s why, whenever I get a recommendation, I save it on Google Maps. That way, when I’m out and about, I can check Google Maps to see which places close by have been recommended. It saves a ton of time and avoids disappointment by knowing the place you’re headed offers gluten free options.
